Step 1: Check Your Box

Before doing anything else, let’s make sure your Ledger device is safe to use.

Unbox Your Device

When you receive your Ledger device, it should be sealed in a tamper-evident box. It should contain:

⚠️ Important: Ledger devices are never shipped with a pre-set PIN or recovery phrase. If you see one, do not use the device. Contact Ledger support immediately.

Step 2: Go to Ledger.com/start

You're already here — perfect! This is the only official place to set up your Ledger device. Avoid third-party apps, random YouTube tutorials, or unofficial download sites. They may try to trick you into revealing your recovery phrase or downloading malicious software.

Step 3: Download Ledger Live

Ledger Live is our all-in-one companion app, available for desktop and mobile. It lets you:

Make sure you're downloading from our official website. Always verify the site’s URL and look for the secure lock icon in your browser.

Step 4: Set Up Your Device

Once Ledger Live is installed, open the app and select “Set up a new device.” Choose your model (Nano S Plus, Nano X, or Stax), and follow the on-screen instructions.

During setup, you’ll:

  1. Create a PIN code
    This protects your device. Choose a secure PIN that only you know.
  2. Write down your 24-word recovery phrase
    This is the most important step. Your recovery phrase is your backup. If you ever lose your device, you can use this phrase to recover your assets. Write it down on the recovery sheet provided. Never store it digitally or share it with anyone.
  3. Confirm your recovery phrase
    You’ll be asked to verify it word by word. Take your time—this is your last line of defense.

Step 5: Add Accounts

Once your device is initialized, Ledger Live will guide you to add accounts for the coins or tokens you want to manage—Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and thousands more. Each account represents a specific blockchain.

After adding an account, you’ll be able to:

Step 6: Transfer Your Crypto

Now that your Ledger wallet is ready, it’s time to move your assets.

  1. Choose the account you want to receive into.
  2. Click Receive and copy your Ledger-generated address.
  3. Paste it into the sending platform (exchange, wallet, etc.).
  4. Double-check the address and network before confirming the transaction.

Ledger Live will notify you once the transaction is confirmed. Congratulations—your crypto is now secured by your Ledger device!
